This week, we’re going to focus on one concept: know thy enemy.
It’s Cool, We’ve Been Here Before
This week, the United Kingdom announced plans to implement a boycott of Judea and Samaria. Several European countries and Canada joined them, bringing the total making such an announcement recently to a dozen.
Now, it’s going to take the UK about 6-9 months to implement this policy (socialists, it seems, do nothing quickly). For the time being, all this amounts to a press release - albeit one with bells, whistles and maybe a little bit of a parade.
In a terrible way that makes sense, given that – across the board - the politicians’ motivation for advancing this institutional bigotry is simple: they want to appeal to a portion of their population for whom Jew-hatred is the core operating principle.
But here’s the thing… once you crunch the numbers, it does not look great for the Israel-haters.
First, several of the countries targeting Israel’s economy have economies smaller than Israel’s. Second, Israel is a meaningful supplier to Europe (and the world) of high-tech, defense, cyber, pharmaceuticals and semiconductor-related exports, among other sectors.
Finally, even if we choose to set aside both the futility and stupidity of this effort for a moment, there’s those pesky state anti-BDS laws – dozens of laws that dozens of British companies would run afoul of if London actually implements this farce.
Not sure our friends across the pond thought this one through. But, they can give their friends at the UK-based Unilever a call and ask them how this worked out for their former subsidiary, Ben & Jerry’s. Meanwhile, we’ll be the ones eating Rocky Road right there in the heart of Jerusalem.
Know Thy Ally
We intentionally chose to conclude our comments today with this focus, because we wanted you to think about it after you’re done reading. This week commemorates the 25th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the homeland.
Many of us remember where we were; some are too young.
Either way, the lessons of that day should be taught and remembered by every generation. Moreover, we need to acknowledge that the horror is not over. At this point, more people have died with confirmed 9/11-related illnesses, than died at that spot, on that day.
Much of the radical Islam, as we know it today, existed on 9/11/2001 – and they celebrated it. The enemy is not done, but, perhaps, neither is the free world?
The United States, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Argentina, Bulgaria, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, and Israel, among many other countries, have suffered so much tragedy due to this poisonous hydra.
The average people in these countries, once one cuts through the noise and hyperbole, simply want to live in peace and security. Americans and Israelis, Brits and Emirates, simply want peace.
So let us not allow our adversary to convince us to embrace him. Rather let us fight the radical Islam that has found favor amongst some right here in our own backyard, and let us do so with the knowledge that the only Ally that matters is on our side.
