In this week’s edition of the Action Update, we examine “snapback” sanctions against Iran - both their definition and status – as well as the latest from Gaza, Syria, and the increasingly unhinged online agitators and members of Congress who’ve decided no anti-Jewish conspiracy theory is too absurd for them to advance.
Snapping Back (or not)
Last week, the German Chancellor, who has been very clear-eyed about Israel’s operation against Iran, announced that Germany would begin the UN Security Council process for snapping back sanctions against Iran. The latest news is that Germany, France and the UK will advance the measures necessary to reimpose those sanctions by the end of August if the West’s negotiations with Iran have not concluded positively (spoiler alert: they won’t).
So, what are we really talking about? Between 2006 and 2010, the UN Security Council advanced six significant resolutions sanctioning Iran for its malign activities. President Obama’s foolish Iran nuclear accord removed those sanctions (which helped enable the 10/7 Massacre).
If it is ever employed, the snapback mechanism is a good one. Here is the process: First, a JCPOA-party country (e.g, Germany) formally claims Iran has violated the nuclear accord. Then, within 30 days, the UN Security Council must adopt a resolution to ignore the complaint. Failure to adopt such a resolution, which like all such resolutions can be vetoed by any permanent member (e.g. the U.S.), results in the reimposition of sanctions.
Here’s the catch: the process above expires at the end of the year. Bottom line, 2025 is the year Iran’s chickens came home to roost (to borrow a phrase). What happens next on the sanctions front will largely determine if our children must go in and repeat the job. If the West indeed seizes the opportunity presented by Israel’s daring actions and brings the Islamic Republic to its knees, the job will have been fully completed.
A Light Unto the Nations
We often note that Israel’s many technological and medical innovations make the Start-Up Nation a light unto the other nations. But the truth is that Israel’s morality, the holy spirit of goodwill that flows through Jerusalem’s veins, is the truest and brightest light of the Jewish nation.
With this in mind, it is more easily understood why Israeli soldiers and pilots are risking their lives to protect the Druze minority community in southern Syria, as they were forced to in recent days, from the army of the Islamist regime in Damascus. Syrian Druze are not Israeli citizens; they are children of God, and Israel has made clear that they will not see these innocent people subjugated in southern Syria.
Moreover, Israel has declared that southern Syria will be a military-free zone. As such, the Israelis recently attacked Syrian regime armor, rocket launchers, and the like, that were traveling to a Druze city where sectarian violence – Bedouin Muslims kidnapping and killing Druze innocents - has occurred.
Likewise, the world should recognize that Israel’s persistence in Gaza, so long as her hostages remain there and Hamas remains armed, is an example to be followed. One does not leave innocents in the hands of barbarians. One does not leave barbarians in charge of territory. And Israel is showing that one does not engage in cowardice or iniquity when confronting evil.
Lovers and Haters
Unfortunately, not everyone agrees with the above. Well, it’s not that they disagree in principle; they just disagree when it comes to the Jewish state…
In fact, so gratuitous is their hatred for the Children of Israel that in the past week (and more), Christian Zionism has been attacked by multiple fringe bigots. We raise this not because we’re concerned, but rather because of what these asinine attacks indicate.
Consider that the same haters who attack Christians for loving Israel traffic in all manner of absurd conspiracy theories attacking the Jewish people. From Jewish space lasers to Israel’s intelligence agency being involved in the Epstein scandal, the Hamas Caucus has decided no tale is too absurd and no absurdity is too great when it comes to Jew hatred.
Now, contrast the hysteria of those former supporters of President Trump who cannot stomach the President’s current approach to the Middle East with just a bit of the press coverage CUFI received during the Washington Summit, and it becomes clear the bigots and the isolationists are losing (and they know it).
We received positive reports from the overwhelming majority of the hundreds of meetings CUFI delegates had on Capitol Hill during our Summit. But there are some elected officials who have simply chosen to follow a path of hate, and they are being egged on by those who’ve sold their souls to bigotry in return for whatever infamy they can garner.
This is, of course, a tragic situation. But their hatred is not novel; we’ve seen it before, and we know how it ends for those who hate God’s Chosen.
Sincerely,
The CUFI Action Fund |
